So they copied a feature and made improvements to it. Either way its not really relevant for comparison with modern designs, which is what we're discussing here. The modern smiths and colts operate pretty differently.

The S&W DA action is inferior to the old v-spring Colt DA action IMO.

- The Colt cylinder turns clockwise which pushes the cylinder / crane into the frame, not away like the S&W.
- The 2 stage hand on the Colt locks the cylinder into perfect alignment with the bore when the trigger is pulled (zero cylinder movement).
- The Colt cylinder latch design allows the shooter to press his thumb against it steading the gun during off-hand shooting.

Other folks prefer Smiths. More power to them.
