Failure to stop opponent's winning drives - heartbreak losses cost championships

I'm not offering a solution, just observations.
Bama at LSU, 2012
Clemson, Chic Fil A Bowl 2012
At Georgia, 2013
At Ole Miss, 2013
If we had stopped Bama at the end last year, we would have played in the SEC Champ and maybe even won another BCS title.
If we had stopped UGA and Ole Miss at the end this year, we would now be undefeated and probably #3 in BCS.
We have been SO close to championship seasons both years.
But our defense has not gotten the job done at those critical moments in our last 4 sickening losses.
And we can't say "if only we had last year's defense at Georgia or at Ole Miss." We DID have those guys when we lost the same way to Bama and Clemson last year.
Last night we ran into a GREAT Ole Miss team. They played us as tough as anybody will this season. And we played poorly for almost 3 quarters, to make things that much worse.
But we still found a way to stage a strong comeback and have a chance to win at the end.
But then we failed once more to stop their last-minute drive for the winning score.
For the past 2 years, our defensive failures on opponent's final drives have singlehandedly kept us from playing for SEC and national championships. We have been right there in contention in both years.
So close to the promised land, if only our defense could have just come through at the very end.
I for one, do not discount how close these two Tiger teams have been, to acheiving their ultimate goals, in both 2012 and 2013. They are to be congratulated for acheiving that lofty status for us fans to enjoy.
But great defensive stands to secure wins at the end must return to LSU, for us to reach the highest goals of both the team and our spoiled fanbase.
For some reason, even with last year's stellar players, our defense did not secure the critical wins that could have delivered LSU its championship opportunities.
We have a great defensive coordinator. Surely, this single issue can be resolved.
What say you?

All winnable games. Makes me sick.

LSU played poorly last night but the most consistent failing is and has been the failure to stop teams on third and long. If this can't be improved, LSU will always be almost great, near champions but never really there. Of course, this year we can't stop the run very well either.

If that makes you feel better, then go ahead and think that.
Ole Miss is not a great team. There were a team decimated by injuries and reeling after losing 3 straight games. Then Les Miles comes to the rescue!!

You could add PSU '09 to the list.
Far too often teams shred Chief's D on their last possession. For us, this is his one glaring weakness.

quote:Overstatement victim, you are. That Ole Miss team was unranked, missing 6 defensive starters, with a 1st year coach, and a QB who was not SEC caliber and probably couldn't have even started for Grambling. But keep telling yourself that.
Last night we ran into a GREAT Ole Miss team

GOOD GOD, NO!!!
We ran into an Ole Miss team that had lost 3 straight games. Am ole Miss team that was taking the redshirts off of walk-ons becuse half their team was hurt.
Before injuries, they were an above average team, but with the injuries that HAD NO BUSINESS AT ALL BEING IN TAHT GAME LAST NIGHT.
That's what makes it so infuriating.
It's one thing to lose to a great, equally talented team, but to not even show up for a shite Ole Miss team is defies all explanation.

Alabama went down the field in about 4 plays.
Clemson converted a 4th and 50 deep in their own territory.
Georgia went down the field in about 4 plays.
Ole Miss converted two 3rd and longs.
Sickening.

The 9-6 game where you stopped us in overtime?

LSU has lost 5 games over the last 2 seasons. With the exception of the Florida 14-6 loss, the remaing 4 games have been as a result of the defense giving up late long scoring drives. That should upset all LSU fans because those are losses that should not have happened and they have cost this program dearly!
I have to say that of these 4 losses, this one was by far the worse one. With the key players out for Ole Miss, there is no excuse for the loss last night.
We cannot change these losses, but my main concern is what will the coaching staff do to correct things. The greatest challenge to the character of someone is how they react to a crisis. LSU is quickly approaching a crisis and the next 4 games will truly tell all of us what kind of character this team and this coaching staff really has.
I would really like to see Coach Miles show the same kind of fire that he showed in his early years. What happened to that man who got pissed off at the SEC Champioship game and gave that fiery press conference. I for one would truly love to see that kind of coach again!!!!

Bringing back bad memories...

When your DC refuses to make adjustments and is utterly predictable, what do you expect?
Every team that has done that knew what was coming, especially on third downs. LSU under Chavis with the exception of 2011 has been the most predictable blitzing team that I've ever seen. Teams simply know when and where they are coming from.
People will still defend him and ignore his history at Tennessee.
