You're doing it wrong. Jack your steering wheel up and your seat down and hold your phone sideways while you grip the top of the wheel with your bottom fingers. If you position everything right, you will be looking at the road and your phone at the same time so you can see the yellow lines, cars and brake lights in the periphery without moving your eyes.
People that hold their phone down by their waste and glance back and forth between the road and phone are life insurance companies' worst nightmare.
