5-2 does not necessarily mean 5 DL-men. Two wide ends could be call outside LB.

Don't get caught up in the numbers.

The 5. 2 defense typically had 3 down lineman and two upright ends I think this could help if your ends aren't that athletic because their objective is to contain and turn anything back inside

I was thinking the same thing. The difference btw a 3-4 and 5-2 seem minimal. We are essential using our small DE's as big OLB's. Similar to what the Saints (dome patrol + current) or the NY Giants with Lawrence Taylor and Banks (Jack/Sam) ran. Seems like a great stop gap to me when teams start gutting us.

Exactly. The 5-2 is schematically similar to the 3-4 (although obviously different teams might run it differently). It's not like a goal line set.

Exactly, it's really close to a 3-4. This was the prominent defense used against the option oriented offenses of the 70s and 80s. It' the defense we ran in Highschool (graduated in 85). The ends were essentialy outside line backers that stood up.

That's not necc true at all. In fact, I did see five down linemen to start the game while I never once saw three down linemen with two outside LB types and two middle LB types in any one set.

The 5-2 is what it is. If they want to play a 5-2 with the two outside DEs standing, then they need to call it a 3-4 like everyone else does.
