Um.

People with HIV who get early diagnosis and treatment stand a decent chance of living pretty close to a normal life expectancy.

There literally can't ever be some magic pill that you can pop and you are cured because of how the virus works.

But they have still managed to cure isolated cases of people with a certain genetic allele.

I get your point, but including HIV was a bad choice to support it.

I've been having a low grade desire to make sure I didn't lose the knowledge level I spent years attaining.

In the past few days in fact I got a kick in the arse in the form of a situation coming up where a simple calculus based optimization would have made my job easier, but not quite remembering enough to be able to set up the problem quite right to solve.

I'm thinking of going back to school (again ) and I really need these subjects. This website is awesome and now I'm all about it.

Knowledge is becoming easier and easier to attain. Very good stuff and they say working the brain out helps with Alzheimer's so why not?

My friend's kid (friend is PHd Chemist so it helps) is doing trigonometry before 10 years old

Dad was diagnosed with early onset at 44 passed away 3 years later.

Wouldn't wish it on anyone. Not the worst of the worst.

This news really makes me smile

My grandmother passed away a couple of months ago after having Alzheimer's for the past 10 years. I like to think she's now looking down on me as the woman I knew for the first 20 years of my life, and not the shell she was for the past 10.

re: Alzheimer's breakthrough hailed as 'turning point'

My grandmother lived a long time with Alzheimer's. It was terrible. When I was a kid she was fine, but as I got older into my teenage years eventually she didn't know who I was (or anyone for that matter).

She sat in a home for years not knowing what was going on or who she was. Eventually she forgot how to talk. When she died I was not sad. In my mind she had died long ago but she "lived" way too long with that terrible disease.

I fear for my parents who are in their mid 60's. Hopefully this breakthrough may help them in time if they need it.

Great news, Alzheimer's is horrible disease. Hopefully this becomes official and we can turn the tide on it.

Sorry to hear that man. My grandpa had Alzheimer's and he died in his sleep one night. He didn't know names (he was never good at names anyway) but still recognized people as family. I always think its a blessing that he passed away before it progressed more.

Great news! My grandmother passed away 25 years ago from it, and was a horrific thing. It damn near divorced my parents in the process.

Towards the end she was going to the bathroom in her pants and didn't even know.

Physical and mental exercise supposedly decrease your odds. Do crosswords if nothing else.. Read more books. Jog or go the gym 3 or 4 times a week.

Well the problem here is once in your 60's you won't go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week, and you won't be jogging all that much. My mom got plenty of exercise read constantly, and always did word puzzle games including crossword. She seldom drank any alcohol. Still got the disease. From watching this disease attack my mom, and progress over 4 years, I'm not sure anything less then a medical break through can stop it. Everyone is right too. It's a heartbreaking thing to watch. Another problem is it can begin years before you even notice it.

Heartbreaking disease. My Grandmother has it. Simply the thought of her not knowing who any of her children and grandchildren are, well it just kills me inside. This is amazing news to hear!
