I dropped $100 one day to get mine. I told myself I wouldn't spend that much on this game, but I think it was worth it considering how many hours I put in.

Yeah, I hate that they don't tell you the actual percentages, they just want you to buy gems and press your luck without knowing the odds. But lots of players have collected stats to try to figure it out. If you try to roll a particular 5/5 talent, it will cost you several hundred dollars in gems on average.

I had really bad talents for a long time, and now my talents aren't really great but they are much better than they used to be. On my main 6 guys, I have 3/5 Berserk on 3 of them, 2/5 Bersek on 1, 3/5 Revitalize on 1, and 2/5 Revive on 1.

And if you roll a duplicate hero that has a better talent than your one that's leveled up, don't hesitate to level up the new one and put the old on the sideline. Between HBM and now the exp books, it's too easy to get a new hero caught up.

BTW, which level HBM are you doing? We might need to redesign your base so you can do a higher level and get exp and shards faster.
