It's easier to score from the 10 and then try to get an onside kick and get a few yards to get in field goal range than it is to just kick a field goal and then have to get an onside and drive down the field for a TD
Only go for the FG if it's 4th down

What are the chances of getting that field position again? Very slim.
You are going to have to score a touchdown no matter what.
Might as well go for it when you are only 10 yards out instead of throwing hail marys after the onside kick and praying for a miracle.
