LSU itself prefers no periods.
Associated Press style uses no periods on LSU or any other initials that do not spell a word like NFL or FBI. But they will use periods on initials that do, like D.A.R.E.
New York Times always uses the periods on L.S.U., because the letters are each individually pronounced. They would do the same for F.B.I. and C.I.A.
I know... no one cares...
