Well, usually by the end of the season, one or two drivers had pulled away from the pack, making them the only ones who had a real shot at winning it all.
Now, the 12 that make the chase all have a shot because they basically equalize the points. The idea is to make every year interesting, rather than just the occasional year where all the stars align and the standings are close.

I'd be pissed if I was running away with the points all year, then have everything reset back to 0.
