Wouldn't it give less? In the old way, it was just everybody do your best every race and whoever has the most points wins. Now, after a certain point only 10 people are in contention, right?

And what to the other drives not in the top 10 do when "the chase" starts..why even race if it doesn't matter?

After 26 races, only maybe 4-5 guys at the most would have a realistic chance to contend. With The Chase, all 12 drivers have a shot once the points are reset.

Well, usually by the end of the season, one or two drivers had pulled away from the pack, making them the only ones who had a real shot at winning it all.

Now, the 12 that make the chase all have a shot because they basically equalize the points. The idea is to make every year interesting, rather than just the occasional year where all the stars align and the standings are close.
