On Netflix. It isn't a great film( first, it's a documentary) at all, but for those interested in:

1. The Shining
2. Basically, stream of consciousness "What does art mean?"

Since it's literally a string of speakers talking about what they think the Shining means (one guy even leaves to deal with his kid). While some of the meanings have some unique takes,it is really interesting as just a study into the way we layer meanings onto art.

How do we marry the film maker's intentions onto our own interpretations and cultural bias? How are we sure exactly what a film maker means, especially someone so historically precise as Kubrick?

If it even is possible to unite interpretations under the banner of one film (if the film CAN mean all of these different things), then is it possible to boil down the entirety of culture.

I have always said, Kubrick makes films about the human condition. That the meaning we usually ascribe is always reduced down to primal urges in Kubrick's world. Because of that meaning, there are unique parallels among all of his films. But now I'm not so sure.

The Apollo mission interpretation of the Shining, although ridiculous, is crazy interesting to listen to.

Anyone else watch this? Is there a discussion to be had here?

I saw this a few months ago and enjoyed it. I like how people with radically different theories can all find clues in the same scene to back up their point.

Maybe I'm off base here, but I've never found any of Kubricks work to be precise in its meaning, in any way.

I was really excited for this when it first came out and was let down. It does make some interesting points, but a lot of it was just reaching too far. Some of their arguments could be easily explained that the shot simply looked better that way. It seemed like most of the people seemed just to throw shite on the wall to see what would stick.

[Spoilers]

Favorite: I was really interested in the discussion of the layout of the hotel and how is was constantly changing. More in the sense that it was giving people a subconscious uneasiness that something wasn't right with the place. Not so much the comparison with the floors and the levels of Danny's mind or whatever.

Least Favorite: I actually wasn't crazy about the Apollo theory. I love the conspiracy idea of him filming the the moon landing, but him dropping hints of that in The Shinning was just a reach for me. For example, when the guy was talking about the shot of "No. Room" and said, "the only other words you can spell with those letters is MOON and ROOM! It must be a sign!" I just wanted to be there to tell him, "well, you could also spell moron."

That or the Minotaur poster was pretty ridiculous

Kubrick also had crew go around the country and take pictures and get research of hotel decor from around the country because he wanted the hotel decor to look very generic and familiar to people. That kind of puts a wrench in all of the decor theories that people have
