Could someone tell me a show that would be a good start for someone trying to get into the DBs? I don't think I've ever heard any of their stuff and since my dive into the Phishbowl has been so successful so far I'd like to keep broadening my spectrum. Oh and i'd prefer if it was on Spotify.

Please don't ever say that phrase again. It is embarrasing to phans and SPS grads everywhere.

I don't use spotify. Want a studio album? Check out 1998's Uncivilized Area, 2006's The Wind at Four to Fly, and 2006's Rocket 3; preferably in that order.

The Wind at Four to Fly was my intro to Bisco. Wore that CD out in high school smoking bowls in my buddy's Benz. Story of the World and Caterpillar ftw (not sure if those are heady enough for you vets )

I guess Phans is better. I'm new so I still have to find out the acceptable lingo. I take it you are an SPS grad as well?

It was also mine. I love those CDs. It's the disco biscuits in their classic jammy form before they got more electronic. Still my favorite kitchen mitts, home again, and caterpillar. Shimmy in a Congo line is also awesome on there.

Figured I would post some 1.0 greatness. This is an amazing show from start to finish. I would give anything to have been into these guys back when they were playing like this. That's not to say I don't dig what they're doing now, but I love this style of playing/jamming. It's so cool to hear elements of what is now "Strobelights & Martinis" in Mindless Dribble here.

Disco Biscuits Live at Wetlands Preserve on 2001-09-01

I: Story of the World, Triumph > Haleakala Crater, Kamaole Sands, Home Again

II: Once the Fiddler Paid, Mindless Dribble > Above the Waves** -> Mindless Dribble > Floes > House Dog Party Favor

E: Pygmy Twylyte > Run Like Hell > Pygmy Twylyte -> Run Like Hell

From the outset and the Story opener it's evident that more than just another show lie in store. Story pushes the limits of sound and synergy and serves as a sonic precursor of things to come. Triumph is a fine choice to follow. While it may not live up to other more recent versions you will hear bare in mind it is one of the first ever played, and thus unique in that regard. Additionally, listen for the slight Story tease toward the end -- immediately followed by a serene streaming segue of which Haleakala Crater emerges. Very cool. Haleakala is rare and has beautiful lyrics so good stuff there. Kamole starts off smoking and then gets slightly psychedelic before settling back within its theme. Very solid version. Home Again is high energy and a great choice to end a very good 1st set.

Set 2 in any fair assessment obliterates nearly any other set ever played -- possibly by any band, ever. Once the Fiddler is rare and rages, but more then that it allows you to be caught off guard by what comes next. Mindless Dribble begins what is easily one of the most memorable song strains ever assembled by the Biscuits. DRIBBLE>WAVES>DRIBBLE>FLOES>HOUSEDOG knows no equal. Dribble is the sickest ever played and displays what I call the imminent evil jam (5 mins in). Roughly 18 mins in it becomes clear that a perverse inversion of Waves is next. Waves soars to all new heights before crashing back into Dribble. Jedi like jamming ensues characteristic only of 9/1/01. Listen for the first allusions of Floes around the fifteen minute mark. Floes is the best I've ever heard, is monstrously entertaining, and segues into Housedog with jaw dropping precision. The Housedog is utterly out of control easily dwarfing any other version I've heard.

The encore picks up right where set 2 leaves off -- super tight playing only overshadowed by extraordinary seging. Pygmye leads off, then into Run Like Hell. Run sprints out of the gate, back into the Pygmy Twilight briefly, then redefines raging one last time with the back end of Run.

Welcome to the Darkside bitches

Haleakala is one of my favorite songs. Never seen one live but awesome nonetheless.

GOAT mindless dribble

08.16.2003 Trance Mission

This might be one of the best Disco Biscuits shows ever played. Maybe one of the best concerts in the history of mankind.

Set I: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, The Devil's Waltz, Sabre Dance, The Thieving Magpie, The Overture, In the Hall of the Mountain King, Waltz of the Flowers

Set II: (8/11>)Magellan Reprise, spacebirdmatingcall > Three Wishes > Big Happy > I Remember When > And the Ladies Were the Rest of the Night > spacebirdmatingcall > Humuhumunukunukuapua'a > (8/15>)Reactor
Setbreak: DJ Mauricio

Set III: Crickets, Mindless Dribble(dub) > Triumph > Pilin' it High > Triumph > Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies, Morph jam > Basis for a Day > Run Like Hell
Encore: Frog Legs

Set 1 kicks off with Mozart's famous, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, a classic that Barber destroys. Mozart would've jizzed his baroque panties. It then flows into Devil's Waltz, a rather rare gem that they haven't played in years. The song begins with almost a klezmer feel to it as we go back to Brownie's Yiddish roots like it's barbers bar mitzvah. The jams then phase into the theiving magpie then overture. The Theiving Magpie jam is reminiscent of a clockwork orange when alex is visualizing the "ultraviolent" beehtoven would've been fapping uber hard if he could only hear this version of his greatest symphony. this first set isnt too trancy until overture, but is a great example of the greatness that the biscuits were.

I needn't say anymore about set 2. Magellan Reprise, spacebirdmatingcall > Three Wishes > Big Happy > I Remember When > And the Ladies Were the Rest of the Night > spacebirdmatingcall > Humuhumunukunukuapua'a > (8/15>)Reactor is one of the greatest compositions of music I've ever listened to in my life.

Everything in the first set is played very well, and the jam in Overture is actually very good. The first set is all "classical" songs, commonly referred to as the "Classical Set." This is a perfect set all-around. Magellan Reprise - Set 2 begins with an absolutely beautiful version of Magellan Reprise, despite the band's best efforts to ruin it with moaning. Spacebird > 3 Wishes > Big Happy > IRW > Ladies > Spacebird > Humu > Reactor - Whoa. SBMC actually has a good jam in it! Surprise, surprise! And it's very enjoyable. This sequence would have been so much better if it was Some cool triplet stuff from Sammy during the Spacebird peak which melds into 3 Wishes. It's worth noting here how cool these segues are. The end of 3 Wishes has some of Big Happy in it, which then seamlessly melds in IRW. The end of IRW has some Ladies intro stuff in it which melds into Ladies. I actually don't mind 3 Wishes or IRW, but I'd rather they just cut out the non-jammed out songs for this set (and probably, all sets). The jam out of Ladies gets into a sick trance groove from the get-go and never falls out of it. Very good Ladies peak which drops right into the final portion of Spacebird. In the background of the final portion of Spacebird, they're playing bits of Humu, and the song melds into Humu. The Humu jam starts out happy and light and within a couple minutes turns into a dance party in a minor key. Magner remains on the vibraphone patch for the first few minutes of the jam, and Barber/Brownstein are just locked into sick grooves. This leads into a great Reactor ending to end the 2nd set. Near-perfect set overall. Crickets - Mauricio plays with the band on Crickets here, and adds some really cool effects to the song. The first jam is perfect. Layered drums and rhythmic effects from Mauricio and Sammy, great soundscaping from Magner with his pads, and Barber is choosing his notes wonderfully. Cool version of the peak at almost half the speed it's normally played. Sick electro 2nd jam. This whole Crickets is very, very good. Dribble > Triumph > Pilin > Triumph > DotSF > Morph > Basis > RLH - 1st jam in Dribble is a nice dub jam with some interesting textural effects by Magner. There's not really a jam into Triumph so much as they just segue out of the Terrible Triplets from Dribble and just slowly place the Triumph beginning on top of them. The Triumph jam is rather directionless, but Magner plays some very psychedelic effects throughout a good portion of the jam. Pilin > Triumph is absolutely beautiful. Pure blissco all the way, and they build this one so perfectly. The end of Triumph has some MEMPHIS lyrics right before they drop into Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies, which is a great cover. There are so many creative things about this show, and the setlist is done so well. The drop out of Dance and into the Morph jam is really unique and perfectly executed. The Morph jam is pretty generic in general. And then: huge Basis intro. They start pretty focused from the gate, and the Sammy-Brownstein connection here is just awesome. This jam really showcases the band's communication well. They get into a fantastic jam and really do a great job building it. This turns into a devilish dance party before the Basis drop comes. This show just gets better and better. There's no middle jam in this Basis, and the composition ends at 17:28. Given that there's about 30 seconds of composition, and 2-3 minutes after they hit the Basis ending progression, this means that we're about to hit 20+ minutes of jam. The Basis 2nd jam is multi-thematic, pushes forward, pulls back, and has it all. Really, really well done jam, good peak, and then rather than the 2nd ending, they drop into a jam back into RLH. The jam back into RLH starts out slower than you'd imagine, and there's this airy feel to it until they begin building back up to head towards the ending. This jam is also very well done. Frog Legs - Standard, but after a show like this, who really cares what they play for an encore and whether it has a jam or not? This show is as good as 2003 Biscuits get, and is among their all-time best shows, in my opinion (assuming of course you count the 1st set as a part of the show). The 1st set is perfect except for a minor flub here and there from Barber (the only one I know for sure is in Sabre Dance). 2nd set is damn near perfect and it's really creative how they pull off the segues. In the 3rd set, the jam out of Triumph is a little too directionless for my tastes and Morph is pretty generic, but the rest of the set is absolutely fantastic, especially the Pilin > Triumph, and the enormous Basis. Get this show right now and listen to it over and over. If I could rate this show 6 stars, I would.
