Your post has the answer to the problem at hand. We don't have a problem in white middle class America. The problem exists in the poor urban class that doesn't have the strong family unit to teach their children right from wrong. The idiotic mass shootings once every few years is what makes the headlines. I've said since the day of Sandy hook that more kids did in school bus accidents each year than are shot to death in their school.
I don't need the government to mandate classes for my children to teach them how a gun operates. I'm certain no one in this thread needs it either. My concern going forward is that we are in the minority on the issue and the gap is growing wider and wider daily.

So how do we extend education to those who don't have the family structure to teach them. Others in this thread have said you shouldn't look at someone and claim them inept to handle a firearm though.

IN. THE. SCHOOLS.
Institute Marksmanship teams to go along with the baseball and basketball teams. Teach marksmanship as part of PE.
Instead of arming terrorists, give that money to USA Shooting. Let them head up the gun safety education of the children. At the same time, they can groom the next gold medalists in the Olympics.
Do it for the sake of the children.

Yep. I did say that. That's why I disagreed with you that a firearms class should be mandatory. It's a constitutional right to own them. There is nothing in the constitution about cars so that's why I don't like that argument.
And I agree that there should be firearms classes in schools. That would be the best time to mold young minds into respecting a powerful tool.
The problem with that is getting parents onboard. You know you'll have your crazy parents that believe guns are taboo and are completely useless and dangerous. I think making it optional would be great. The next step would be getting schools onboard. And to you I say... good luck with that. If it did happen though, I would be the first to volunteer and teach some kids.
