I'm glad you saw him eying Douglas IRL, b/c I don't see it in the film.
I'll admit I'm partially wrong about his throw, due to the pressure he was getting. But he still could have led TG a bit more and been free of Vaccaro -- if he'd put the proper touch on the ball. To stay nothing of moving toward his right -- he definitely panicked in the pocket.

it's not as easy to see from this angle, but you can see his head move from one player to the other when he throws. Admittedly, the play is quicker than it felt. The pressure does force him off douglas (so I'm wrong there) however, if you watch it a few times, he is clearly targeting douglas before he moves to tony and then throws the ball
