I follow this at times too. It's all really circumstantial.

If the oldest male at the table is grandpappy with his breathing machine, he's likely not the one paying

I can tell when 40-year-old son is taking 80-year-old dad and all the kids and grandkids to dinner. But as I said before, the one paying (40-year-old dad) tends to talk to me directly a lot and make it clear he's the one paying.
