You really need two. Gas and charcoal are not in competition. They do different things.
The offset shown above certainly works. I have one. There is one huge problem with it. Most smoked meats are going to take most of a day. You're going to have problems with temperature. They are extremely inefficient. You can't leave the house during a cook. Mine will be moded soon. I'll post pics.
If it were me, it would come down to this: do I smoke more, or grill more? If you grill more, gas is the no-brainer answer. You're not getting anything from charcoal if you grill.
If you smoke more, get something in line with a temperature fan. Something like:
