I personally use a Weber propane (wasn't $700)
But I saw Weber charcoal grills on sale at Lowe's monday. It may have been a labor day sale only, but worth looking into. I think the kettles were $79, $99, $149 depending on the size you wanted.
If I was going charcoal and didn't have a separate smoker, this is the route I would go. I almost bought one just to use on occasion by the pool or for portability elsewhere
