I was at that game. "Official" capacity was 78,000 at that time. And you are correct, the difference was the number of students attending the game-they were the only persons without assigned seats. At that time, there was no limit to the number of students allowed in. If they had a valid student ID, they got in.

BTW, that was the best and only good game Jeff Wickersham ever had at quarterback!!

Awesome days they were. Just show up, get in.

Every stair in the SS had like 3 people on it.
