I don't like guide rod lasers because you can't sight them in. Other lasers can be sighted in at least near the point of impact.
I think a laser would be good for a small gun for concealed carry but not much else.
Two benefits to having a laser:
1. Unnatural shooting positions (as BP mentioned)
2. Keeping both eyes open
I've almost gotten to the point of shooting with both eyes open with standard pistol sights but I'm not quite there. But for a defensive scenario when I would prefer to keep my eyes on the TARGET, I imagine it would be beneficial.
