Depends on the game, but I usually take my time figuring out what works for me. Anywhere from 1 to 20 hours depending on how deep the game is.

I think I have trashed a character after 30 hours to start over.

That is for games with 100s of hours of playtime.

If I know the campaign mode only take 10 to 20 hours then it doesn't really matter.
