Why do you think CSP felt Will Smith would be a competent NFL linebacker?

Not to beat a deadhorse...because this thread is about our Defense as a whole and not just Smith, but I think its obvious that our outside backers will be a weak spot in coverage this season.

I know enough about a 34 to know that your outside guys do not rush every down. And as we saw in the first preseason game...we were getting torched in the flats by the Chiefs starters. What do you think ATL will plan to do in week 1? Throw to Jackson and Rogers in the flats.

I just heard Detellier (sp?) On epsn radio discussing this very topic and it got me thunking: Will CSP move Will Smith around and even others if they struggle or just stick it out this season and have the players learn by trial and error try to add depth next offseason?

Thoughts on our defense guys? And here's to a good season

It is my belief that CSP, out of deference for the veteran player, is giving Will Smith the best possible opportunity to succeed.
That's why he's starting with the ones.

It is my hope that CSP is open to removing him if he continues to underperform.

I think there are about six million reasons!

He'll probably stay on the roster due to the cap figure that we'd lose anyway. I can't fault him for trying something unique with what we have, but I had this pegged from the start. It was a longshot.

I am most disappointed with them getting Vacarro when a perfectly fine OLB was on the draft board, but hey, both our secondary and linebackers were in pretty bad shape. My argument was the fact of importance of the OLB position in a 3-4. I truly hope Martez Wilson will be available for that game - if not we could have a really bad day.

IIRC, didn't Smith play some 3-4 OLB in college? I think the main reason is money though, it costs almost as much to cut him as to keep him, so you give him every chance to succeed as a starter before asking him to swallow his pride and be a backup.

One of the marks of this regime has been the best player plays regardless of contract and draft position. Although smart/coachable/experienced seems to win out when the guy behind him isn't significantly better, see Scott Shanle.

He is giving him a shot to make the team and to be a contributing factor. He has respect for him many in our fan base.

It's all part of the smoke screen for unleashing the best defense in the league come early September.
