TV food host Adam Richman toured the country and sampled 28 sandwiches, and when the smoke cleared, he named DiNic's roast pork, served at the Nicolosi family's stand at Reading Terminal Market, the best in the nation. DeNic's is legit. Reading St. terminal is legit in general.
Parc is a fantastic french bistro type restaurant done by Steven Starr...similar to Luke in NOLA, except better.
There is a really good sushi restaurant called Umai Umai near the Museum of Art. They have a sea bass app that is one of the best things I've ever eaten...also have some really interesting rolls there if you like sushi. (And it's a BYOB restaurant, which is pretty awesome)
El Vez is pretty good...it's another Steven Starr restaurant. Really cool theme and really good drinks and guacamole.
500 Degrees has some pretty killer burgers. Buffalo Burger was awesome IMO...and the truffle oil fries are what dreams are made of.
My gf is a bit Steven Starr obsessed (pretty good reason as most of his places are good and interesting). She really likes the Continental and Frankford Hall. I've been to Frankford Hall, really cool place out in Northern Liberties (kind of a hipsterish area), it's a great place to grab a quick bite and a beer.
I've never had Pat's or Gino's, but IIRC, most locals will tell you neither is good. We always get Dalessandros over in Manayunk. Let me know if you will be in the Manayunk area as my gf lives there and I've been to many of the restaurants in that area.
Lastly, and most importantly IMO, 4 words: swedish fish water ice. Find a Rita's and try it. It's awesome.
