thanks for all the advice ... sampled two Starr joints, El Vez and Buddakan. Buddakan was outstanding. Jose Garces' (Iron Chef fame) Distrito was good too ... did the tequila pairing.
the sandwich at Dinic's was overrated in my opinion. didnt care for the sharp provolone or the bitter greens in the broccoli rabe.
had the pleasure of eating at Jim's Steaks, and it was amazing. the whiz makes it.
sampled a few donuts at Federal Donuts and dined at a small BYOB called the Farm and the Fisherman. both good, but not great.
... and had the water ice at the Phillies game.

I saw the 4th St. Delicatessen on a food show once. Looked like a great lunch spot. Haven't been there though.

you gotta try a traditional philly cheese, then you gotta find a mom and pop italian eatery or better a grocery store with a full deli and uncomfortable chairs and ask for the wedding soup (escarole and turkey) then for breakfast get a bagel with virginia ham, egg and merican cheese. This was my experience from locals while working up there.
just ask the locals when you get there.

I just came back from there and I liked Jim's cheese steak the best. But you have to be ready to order when you get up to the window. Reminded me of the soup nazi from Seinfield.
