re: Russell Shepard getting some NFL pub

my main issue with miles on his misuse (and again, i don't think shep was a star that miles totally held back) was not using him more as a decoy.

like payton used bush sometimes. someone to make the D always have to acct for where he is.

but i can also understand a coaches mentality of why waste a decoy when you can have an extra blocker.

still would've loved to see him on field to eff with defenses' heads.

and here comes the hate.
what hate? i don't hate RS. I hope he succeeds. I just doubt he will. He is limited in what he can do at the two different positions he fits in best at. He is the product of ridiculous hype that put in way above what he ever was going to be in college. It isn't his fault and it isn't Miles' fault. IMO, they both did their best to maximize his potential.

If he makes it in the NFL, great. That won't mean that he was lazy in college. and, it doesn't mean that Miles is a terrible coach who misused him. And if he doesn't make it in the NFL, too bad. It still doesn't mean that RS is lazy or doesn't work hard. And, it doesn't mean that Miles is proven right about how he used him.

Who is going to beat him out?

With Maclin done, they need all the help they can get.

The chances are with him, not against him.

And I don't have an agenda. I'm just stating facts that the pumpers are unwilling to accept.

If he was as bad as many of you make him out to be, he would have never even gotten signed as an UDFA.

The incompetence in this thread has kept me laughing since I went to sleep

I love Shep more than anybody, but the chances are definitely not with him.

Don't be surprised if Philly brings in another vet to help mitigate the loss of Maclin.

I seriously doubt anyone would be angry that a former LSU player makes a NFL roster.

i totally agree, but if he keeps raising eyebrows, no reason to think he can't be a #5.

they already have 5 guys back from last year:

Jason Avant
Riley Cooper
Damaris Johnson
Greg Salas
DeSean Jackson

If they keep 6 on their roster (which is what the Saints generally do as a pass happy team), then these guys are all fighting for the last spot:

Arrelious Benn (5th year)
Dave Ball (3rd year)
BJ Cunningham (2nd year)
Ifeanyi Momah (2nd year)
Russell Shepard (1st year)
Will Murphy (1st year)

RS could very well make the team. But, he's fighting an extreme uphill battle just based on the numbers.

Too bad he didn't work like that when he was a tiger.

I believe he is where he is because he did work like that at LSU. It's tough learning a new position and being great at it in two years. His development track was not as long as others. Magee also couldn't tansition to WR in one year.

For Shepard, in year one he played QB. Year two he was used pretty much as a RB. Leaving him only two years to fully transition to a wide receiver. He's doing well, getting comfortable with the position and appears to be putting it all together. He's in the perfect offense and I really hope he succeeds. He is still an LSU Tiger.

Personally I hope the guy just wrecks up the NFL just so we can shove it in all those nega-tigers faces that railed on him for the last 3 years on this site!!!

Me too. I would expose Les' total fricking boobery once and for all.

Shep also has a big mouth. That can be good and bad. At first it was good he hyped up the talent and helped recruit. Then when things didn't really go his way, it began to get him in the doghouse. Inevitably he was stuck there and not so much a coaches favorite.

re: Russell Shepard getting some NFL pub

There was one main thing RS was really good at, that was being in open space once he had the ball secured. If he some how got the ball, had enough time to turn around and take a step or 2, he would juke/run by or wiggle through tacklers, that was his one big skill.

Though, getting him the ball was the problem. Not physical enough to warrant a regular RB or WR spot, didn't have good enough hands to catch the ball consistently and of course when he was at RB every one knew he was getting the ball. Fumbles and dropped catches didn't help.

Lets put this to rest, Coach Miles gave him plenty of chances and RS worked very hard as well. Sometimes things just don't work out, I'm sure if we had a better QB, even RS would've caught those balls and made big gains, but we didn't. And if we ran the spread, RS could've been on the field a lot more, such that his talents would eventually shine. GREAT players, MAKE things happen.

I think both RS and Coach Miles get a pass for this situation. RS does have a second chance with a spread offense and a great QB, and if he truly was special he'll make something out of this. One of my favorite Tigers a humble and hard working young man, best of luck to him!

I love Shep, but he has always been a monster in practice, then against someone like Georgia a DB picks him up horizontally and body slams him. I wish him all the success and luck and I hope Kelly can get him in space behind the backers against a safety

so if Shep doesn't make it, it will confirm Les' genius when it comes to utilizing talent?

Well, I used Wade Ritchey's NFL career as the yard stick I beat DiNardo to death with, so fair's fair.

Personally, I think Les wanted the recruiting feather in his cap but ultimately, he never really had any idea what to do with him in his flat, featureless farmboy system.

I think Les thought Shepards arm was better than it was, which it wasn't. Les didn't recruit him purely as a feather in his cap. Shep should have been a much better player in college but ultimately he couldn't catch well and wasn't tough enough once he did catch the ball or running out of the backfield. He's elusive as hell but that's not going to cut it past high school.

He has made it to an NFL camp.

that's better than 99.9999% of the population. If he makes the roster what will your comment be on this topic?

Chip did it to troll Miles?

He shouldn't have come to LSU.
Miles too old fashioned. Lol at someone saying Miles did "everything he could" for Shep to succeed. That's some true delusion right there.

I'm a pretty big Miles hater. And I think Miles went above and beyond in trying to help RS succeed.

What I meant was that just being elusive but lacking in other skills such as catching and breaking tackles will limit a player. Elusiveness is a luxury type of skill, not a basic skill that you need to succeed at the top levels of football.

On the other end, a guy like M. Colston with the Saints isn't very elusive at all but the guy is a very good wr because he mastered the basics for the position like catching, route running, etc.
