Soriano caught a red eye flight to New York last night. No deal is official yet, but he's said his goodbyes already and is presumably with the Yankees.
Bleacher Nation has some information that the Cubs save $7M-$12M of the $25M still owed to Soriano and get to choose from either Corey Black (21 years old, A) or Tommy Kahnle (23 years old, AA).
John Sickels ranked Black 12th in the Yankees system, while Kahnle was ranked just outside the top 20.
The fact that the Cubs get any savings AND a player they could possibly use out of this deal is a miracle. They didn't need to trade Soriano, but I think they wanted to for his sake.

I expected the Yankees to make Cubs eat more of that contract.... I expect Yankees to let Granderson walk this offseason and run out Gardner in CF, Soriano LF, and Ichiro in RF with Wells rotating in as well and he/Soriano splitting DH next season.

Agreed. I'd been happy keeping the elder statesman around through next year, but it opens a spot to see if lake can stick and gives him a shot for another playoff run.
sounds like his goodbye was emotional to say the least.
