Cameron is a complete package guy, and the first coach in a very, very long time at LSU with legit QB development skills. I think he's a great fit for any Offensive player regardless of position who wants to play in the NFL.
He has definitely had success with running and passing. He used LaDamian Tomlinson brilliantly in San Diego, and he helped Drew Brees immensely among others; in Baltimore, he helped Flacco develop into a highly regarded QB as much as he helped Ray Rice.
The complaints about Cameron not using Rice enough stemmed from losses where play calling was second guessed. For as much of a big deal was made of this-- and used as some as justification for why he was let go-- Rice averaged one more carry per game after Cameron left (as someone else noted).
Cameron did have at least one very public fight with Harbaugh, which likely diminished his chances of being retained once that possibility got a little steam, but I'm pretty sure it was the Ravens organization wanting to appease Flacco that was the greater catalyst. Ironically, it was Cameron's tutelage that really helped Flacco excel. It would be purely guesswork (for me anyway) to suggest Flacco was a prima donna or Cameron became inflexible and didn't listen to Flacco, etc. The broad sentiment Harbaugh expressed when he let Cameron go was that the team needed to be shaken up in some way.
Regardless of the politics that drove that situation-- Cameron is a hell of an offensive coordinator who has had a lot of success. And I look forward to seeing the direction the offense takes this season.
