All of the "casual" fans have written him off as a bust. Which is pretty stupid when you look at how bad some stars did as rookies.

I love to use the Kobe Bryant example. Obviously I don't expect Rivers to be one of the best SGs to ever play basketball but I bet no one foresaw Kobe's elite career after he put up 7 points a game and couldn't stop turning the ball over.

The dude was playing at a severe disadvantage from day 1: young, inexperienced, small, light, target on his forehead, and more.

Plus, he was asked to play 30 minutes or whatever when he should have been playing 3. Somehow, accepting the challenge and duty was viewed as a negative. He was like tank man if the tank had run him over. (Not that tank, a real tank).

None of that means he'll be a good player, but taking last seasons as the main predictor of future performance when there are so many other things to consider is misguided.
