Much more the latter. But as I said, I have very few expenses. I'm single (as in not married), have no kids, car is payed off, no credit card or student loan debt, or any other debt, and I don't spend money on material possessions. It's pretty easy to live off of a relatively small income when you don't throw money away.

well aren't you mr. responsible. don't forget to live your life!

When I say "savings" I mean retirement accounts.

Also, how long did y'all save up for your emergency accounts? Should I hold off retirement accounts for that.

Situation- 24, wife 29, 1 baby on the way.

We'll gross 85 next year. 12k in my Roth, 1k in her ira. 7k in checking (I personally want to keep it north of 5k)

Oh I do, just because I'm responsible with my money doesn't mean I don't have fun. Most of my expendable money goes towards going out, eating out, and traveling.
