But that would mean your "starters" (2nd string talent) is playing against the opposing teams starters (1st string talent). I am of decent intelligence and this doesn't seem logical.

You can't play guys 48 minutes and there is only one ball to go around. If you have Holiday/Gordon/Evans on the floor together at the same time at least one of them is likely going to waste each possession. In crunch time this waste is acceptable because you want to maximize your options to make sure you can score when you have to. Throughout the rest of the game you are taking shots away from a starting level player and giving them to a 2nd string level player. If you spread your "starting talent" out then you have starters taking shots all game and fewer bench players taking shots away from starters.
