Even though I wanted to put COD4 on there, as fun and as innovative as it was, I compare that mess of noise to the simple and pure experience that is BF3 and it's hard to let sentiment get in the way of facts: BF rules over COD, no matter which one. Again, that's preference and I know there's times where chaos reigns, but they did it right with BF3. Hopefully they don't screw the series up. The FPS market needs COD and BF games, and from my experience with Halo 4, it's pretty darn hard to keep COD influences out of your game when you know how popular they are now. Make your game the way you want to make it. Gamers need both styles.

I feel like CoD4 was the very best for a long time. Until BF3 came along and did everything better. No killstreaks, you get vehicles right off the bat. No perks, just "specializations" that don't make you an overpowered troll. Weapons customization. Destructible (somewhat, even though BFBC2 did it better in Frostbite 1.5) environments. And the one thing that makes it so much better is the DLC. They extended the life of the game and really gave it a wide footprint in gameplay styles that make it a bunch of FPS games in one. It's spectacular.
