Sorry I'm a newbie in basketball but what part of a salary counts against the cap? If you pay a guy 1 mil this year and owe him 21 next, you have to get rid of home after a year right?

Current year salary counts against the cap. So in that case, this year it'd be $1M, next it would be $21M, and yeah, in all likelihood the front office would be making moves to get rid of the guy in preparation for that huge cap hit.

Teams can sign a player in free agency even if they are over the cap but they will have to do a sign and trade. For example, the lakers did a sign and trade last yr to acquire Dwight and Nash
