I recall a blue chip safety named Reid who punked out a certain elite TE in mid air at the goal line to change the outcome of one huge high profile game a couple of years ago

That's a great example, though Mark Barron was a higher rated prospect than Reid (not as high as Collins) but still considered a better prospect which is more to my point. I think you could also argue that missed FG's and a block in the back on an int return by Barron also played a role in the outcome.

While everyone, including LSU's staff if they were drafting would have taken Collins over Thompson, Thompson is also a good prospect and in the end it is not a program changing loss that many of you are making it out to be. Recruiting is about who you get, not who you don't. As long as LSU continues to get top 5-10 classes, we can compete at a high level, even if we miss out on an elite in state player like Collins or Robinson. We will recuit adequate replacements, even if individually the replacements are not as good, they can still be good which is what is most important.

ETA: and how do we know that Collins could for sure make that or a similar play and Thompson or Martin could not?
