That's certainly why he refused to let Clark help him. I don't think he went out there to die on purpose, and I would have an even bigger problem with that. But I did admire the fact that he put what he was convinced was in Clark's best interest above his own. Even at the expense of his own life. He could have come across as cold when he suggested Clark should have let the kids on the bus die. But when it came to his own life he was consistent. Clark in the end learns from both of his dads, by becoming both superman and the alter ego Clark.
