I mean, there were games where he was disciplined. In 09/10 he rarely went forward when we played a single pivot. When we moved to the double pivot he roamed forward, but the problem was he didn't have the stamina to roam back.

I don't think he would come back honestly. And Wenger wouldn't ask him to be disciplined. Flamini and Arteta are discplined, but for different reasons. Flamini loves tackling and running around, and Arteta's injuries have turned the once magnificent winger into a stable DLP who does his damnedest to stay in position for fear of being caught out due to his pace.

At CB Song's ability to pass out of the back would be important, especially as we play a high line anyway. I mean, I don't think he'll come unless he's on a free.

Speaking of which, Mertesacker's passing ability have improved tremendously since he arrived here. God I remember when he first came his first pass was five yards to either the fullback or the deepest midfielder. Occasionally now we see him make a 1st station pass through the 1st line of defense, which is always surprising to see since they usually seem to work. Probably having the Germans there helps with that.

i'm not sure arteta was ever a winger (at least not since his pre-everton days) but maybe i'm misremembering. still your point is valid.

i just think we all have far too fond memories, largely due to a couple of magnificent lofted balls and magical volleys, of a player who was pretty much just a solid player. 2011/12 seems like a pretty big outlier in his career. he's been average to bad at both DM and CB when he's gotten onto the pitch for Barca. he doesn't have the pace to play a high line and his positioning at CB is suspect. i'd only want him playing CB for us if everyone was injured.

the quickness with which we decided to sell him for a non-godfather offer when we still had him on a very reasonable deal is pretty strong circumstantial evidence to me of AW's opinion of his value.

unless barca let him leave for free (maybe they do), it just doesn't make sense. and ManU or somebody would overpay for him anyways. even then, i'd rather us spend our money on fees/salaries for much better or more promising DMs/CBs.
