The tug-of-war between Microsoft and Sony just got more interesting. Multiple sources inform me Microsoft will announce what amounts to a complete reversal on its DRM policies for Xbox One today.
What does this mean?
No more always online requirement
The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
Region locks have been dropped

Bye bye Steam model on console if true!
I was really coming around to buying an Xbox One but this tells me to stick with my PC and Steam and to go ahead and build my HTPC/Steam Box.

If you want the game so bad that you have to buy your new copy when it immediately releases, then buy it for 60. Or just wait and buy the used copy and online code if need be.
I buy used everything just in case I want to bring it back within seven days.

If this is true, I'll bet "family share" and remote game library access go right out the window.
eta. Yep, goodbye family share. We hardly knew ya.

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

Huge win for consumers

Honestly, I'm quite surprised by this.
Microsoft heard the complaints from consumers, but it doesn't appear that the complaints were the sole cause of this change. People have been complaining incessantly for almost a month now.
I imagine the relatively paltry pre-order numbers were the likely impetus for this change. I wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 was outselling the Xbox One at a 3 to 1 one margin. Now that the "DRM" stigma has been removed, I think that pre-orders for the One will skyrocket. Granted, it's still $100 more, but I doubt the PS4 pre-orders will continue to outpace those for the One by such a significant margin.

Additionally, if consoles now have the option of remaining permanently offline, even when playing (single player) games, how will Microsoft harness the "power of the cloud" in their games?

well this changes everything. I'm sticking with Xbox.
