You ever play short or second? Bregman was screened by the runner until the last portion of a second. He could tell direction off the bat, but without constant eye contact on the ball it gets really tough to know how the bounce is going (long, short, top spin, bottom spin, skipping, bouncing, one bounce liner, etc.) the ball will do 100 things off the bat. That momentary screen caused him to only be able to throw leather at the ball. It was a way tougher play to make than what it looked like. Was it playable? Yes but to say there is no excuse is exhibiting a basic misunderstanding of the position. And before you say he should have moved toward the ball/plate/ changed angle of attack - remember the runner was right there and if there was contact between the two it would have been interference on the SS.

bullshite! It was NOT a hard play nor should a runner screening you be an issue.(which I believe is bullshite anyway)

I played a lot of SS in my life and you could say that about every play a SS has to make with a runner at second moving to third. NO EXCUSE....

and if you want to get more picky he should have never let it take that second bounce. He should have been charging the ball instead of playing back on it. Ball can get a crazy top spin when hitting the dirt like it did. All in all a terrible fundamental play by him. I will even go as for to say ask him what he thinks, with his work ethic and competitiveness I am sure he will say the same!

Beer league softball doesn't count. I am sure if you ask him (since you are such good friends and all) he would say he should have had it - just as anyone worth their salt would.

That does not change the fact that is was not as easy as you are saying and the loss does not hang on that one play.

If you have truly played competitive short stop at any decent level you would not be saying the screen by the runner should be a non-issue.

It happens, it did happen.
