The Spielberg/Lucas thread where Spielberg said that Lincoln came "this close" to being an HBO movie got me thinking about this. The only downside to that is that it would not have gotten the Oscars and would not have entered the pantheon of great movies and great acting. It would have been a good movie, but it would have been largely forgotten.

Should the Academy begin to consider movies like Lincoln if they air on HBO instead of in the theaters? What is the difference? Why not?

The Oscars exist to promote movie theaters. HBO kinda fricks that idea.

Really? Is that why they exist? Never heard that. I just always thought there was this dramatic difference between Film and TV. The Emmys are kind of worthless. Who cares, really?

Seems like the Oscars should expand.

That would have been great IMO. Could've made it into a mini series like John Adams. Between 6 to 10 episodes 1 hour long and hit his entire life rather than a 3 hour movie about the passing of the 13th Amendment. I liked the movie but didn't love it.

In my opinion, I find that the shows I watch on TV are better than most of the movies I've seen in the past few years at the movies. Game of Thrones being cited as an example. I'd rather watch GoT the 10 Sundays a year that it comes on than go watch 1 crap movie a week. Within the past year I've only seen about 4 movies in theaters; I used to see waaaay more.
