The PS3 already has digital downloads, and day 1 digital downloads from every major developer/game.
It already allows you to play the game as it downloads.
It already checks via the cloud for any updates to the system and your game library (physical and digital) and automatically downloads those updates whether the console is on or off.
Obviously, sells games, dlc, etc.
What else does Steam do that is so amazing?

The pricing is the biggest reason and what you seem to lose grasp of.
Console doesn't have this pricing and never will with physical copies hampering the market IMO.
