If you didn't know to check the wires at the switch to see what was hot and what wasnt, you shouldn't fool with it. Not being an a-hole. That shite is dangerous.
and before you start messing with electricity find the breaker that goes to that switch and flip it off.

BINGO!
Turn off the breaker for that feed. Some times the breaker doesn't look tripped, but is. Remove the switch from wall and remove the wires feeding the fan. Chances are you have a 3/12 wiring. If you do, two leads will be HOT. One to feed the fan and one to feed the light. The third is a ground wire. Colors of said wires should be Red/hot, black/hot and white/ground. Once you expose the wires at the fan/light and unscrew the switches at the wall, power up the breaker and check for voltage. Know that you ARE handling a HOT WIRE. Check voltage. Never use your right hand when doing so. Reason is if you get hit in your right hand, the shock will travel across your body.
As for as the three switches. One should feed the fan, one for the light and the third could feed a light in a closet.
How long have you been in this house? You need to mark all breakers and what they feed.
Also, every man should learn basic electrical work. It is easy to learn. One just needs the right tools, a good volt meter and a level head. There are some very good DVD's out there on this.
