Not knowing what you're ingesting doesn't clear you of punishment, but in Josh Gordon's case, does a doctor prescribed medicine like cough syrup automatically deserve a 2 game suspension?

In a statement, Gordon said the drug was codeine, and he took it because it was part of the medicine prescribed by a doctor for strep throat.

.
quote:

"The policy terms are strict about unintentional ingestion, but the NFL has not imposed the maximum punishment in light of the facts of my case. Therefore, I have chosen to be immediately accountable for the situation," Gordon said in the statement. "I sincerely apologize for the impact on my team, coaches, and Browns fans. I look forward to working hard in training camp and preseason, and contributing immediately when I return in Week 3."

He's going to lose 4 game checks and has issued an apology for taking what his doctor prescribed . Pretty big punishment for strep throat. It's not like he was drinking purple drank out of a chalice.

In just about any other job, a doctor's prescription for the substance found would suffice.

However it's probably easy for an NFL player to simply get a shady doc's prescription for everything under the sun, so the NFL can't set that precedent.

That's what he says, but how many other drug tests has failed before that one?

The NFL can take the common sense route and say frick it and not care.

No they can't. The NFL has a powerful players union that would use their precedent against them in future cases.

He failed for pot before right?

If he has the script, he has it. If the NFL would look at this on an individual basis, let him show the prescription.

I don't get it either. There's no doubt that the doctor that wrote it was indeed the team doctor. I work for a company that fills NFL players scripts and everything goes through the team docs even in off season.

Gooddell's humiliation over the Saints bountygate finally made him realize that the NFL can't dole out punishment like the NCAA. It has to be more prudent and measured like a court of law. This is an example of a player, getting the short end of the stick. This decision was made with respect to future precedent.

What about adderall usage. It's allowed with a prescription.

Fantasy football analysts might be forced to come up with a new breakout candidate. Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has been suspended two games and fined four game checks for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.
