Re: Digital Currency; Apple files "imoney" patent

Who needs money when you can have iMoney?
Apple has applied for a patent on a combined virtual currency and digital wallet technology that would allow you to store money in the cloud, make payments with your iPhone, and — just maybe — communicate with point-of-sale terminals via NFC.
Not to mention making money by viewing ads.
The patent application, published today by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Organization, details how iPhone users could walk into a store, pay for goods with their phone, and walk out with their merchandise. All of this is possible today, of course, but Apple’s patent application mentions — although does not require — NFC, something that Apple has long resisted adding to the iPhone. NFC facilitates digital wallets and cashless purchasing by wirelessly transmitting payment credentials and pricing information.

Now we're talking. This could grow legs. Would still be regulated though. Unless it's some type of deal like Microsoft Points.

Apple is already in bed with the PRISM program.
They will do whatever the state tells them.

I think this is more a form of digital banking than digital currency.

I'm too lazy to go back and link my post, but in one of my replies to wiki when he asked what would it take for the "digital money haters" to get on board with a digital currency, I wrote it might work if a google or Amazon or Apple provided a currency and they supported it with their technology.

I agree. It sounds more like rewards points more than anything (aside from the digital wallet part).
I'd be on board with it though. It's a good idea, especially the bit about allowing customers to earn them by doing things like watching ads.
It's also a good example what a cluster the patent system is that Apple was able to get a patent for something that isn't really a new idea.
This thread could go in a lot of directions

You ignorant luddites just don't understand technology.
iMoney is in its infancy, not even having a patent granted yet by the statists. It will take time to develop and it will scare the IMF, the World Bank and the Federal Reserve.
There is NOTHING those statists can do to stop iMoney!
One day iMoney will rule the world!!!

That is the most interesting part of the announcement. Bitcoin is already capable of doing nearly everything they described.

already being done with bitcoin

NFC
possible with bitcoin as well

store money in the cloud
lol ok, poor choice of wording but I think I get the gist of what they are saying, and again, bitcoin does this
so, really, all this does is point out that out patent system is retarded if one is granted for this

Have more faith in Apple than I do in Suckoni Mycocki, just saying

This just proves a convoluted and impossible to comprehend fake digital currency is just retarded.

How would this be different than the Google wallet flop?
Other than the fact it would work on more than just Sprint/Nextel?

Google Wallet is a flop?

I think the difference here will be perception.
People actually buy stuff from Apple, but Google is the company that gives away "free" stuff for watching ads.
I think what make it work is that (presumably) it will be seamlessly integrated into iTunes and the AppStore and you won't have to think about how to use it. Then people will slowly start using it with non-Apple merchants after (if?) they see that it works in the Apple ecosystem.

People buy a shite load from Google.. This isnt 2009 anymore.

Great
Just what I want to do with my money. Integrate it into shitty itunes software.

Compared to Apple?
ETA: and for the record, I'm not trying to start one of those goofy assed fights about which platform/company/software is better. I'm trying to point out why Apple might possibly have more success than google.

Apple is making about 5 million per day to Google's 1 million per day. (There are also not competing app stores on iOS that I know of)
Dont understand how a comparison of the two can be used here to say its a "flop".
Google is more recently diving into media sales too.
Those are only app store and play store totals. I think this whole thing is about physical instore sales. In that sense I guess you can say its a flop but dont see how buying it through Apple changes that.
Which brings back the question:

Wiki, this is Apple. Be happy that some form of digital currency (if that is indeed what this is) has piqued our interest. Like we've said all along, all we want is a major player in the game.
