I've caught multiple hogs in just a few hours. Doesn't happen often but it does happen.
Leaving the gate up with no food in it doesn't make sense, they have no reason to go in it. I would put bait in it and leave the door open. That way all the hogs in the area will get used to going in and out. Once you have a large number using it, then you set the gate. If it's new and hogs come up to other ones trapped, they won't go in.
I find that just regular old deer corn works as well as any of those special hog blends. Especially when it's not deer season, you'll be the only one baiting, so it won't take much to get them drawn in.
