An interesting side note is that "in camera" effects were being used as late as Blade Runner (1982). I believe that Hollywood SF films relied on CGI after that.

Yeah.
thought it was tron...at least that one got all the hype because of using computer graphics at least.
Star Wars only got CGI when lucas went back & bastardized it.
