I really believe its got to be appel or Gray. They need arms desperately. Bryant is the only position player I would consider at that spot this year but no telling where he ends up in terms of position

The problem with these power arm college guys is they'll be in their prime and the Astros will still be shite.

They will pull a correa and sign a guy at #1 for way under slot and then take that money to sign a guy that falls and over pay him.

I kind of want the Cubs to take Appel. But I really don't think they make a bad choice out of he and Gray. They are really short on pitching depth in the system.

we will. If the astros don't go super cheap with moran they'll take gray since he's got a ding against him.

Appel has been good for longer. Gray has a better fastball and possibly a higher cealing but this year is when he made a name for himself.

With all that said, Keith Law claims that theo likes Gray more than appel and they are having internal disputes about it. Which i assume means McCleod likes appel more.

I don't think they can go wrong with either pick. Just reading some draft articles online it appears that Appel is slightly more MLB ready than Gray. Bleacher Report (not sure how credible they are) said Appel could follow a Stephen Strasburg like path to MLB, signing in August and appearing in June of the next year.

I guess the one thing the Cubs do have is starting pitching depth at the MLB level, meaning it wouldn't much matter if Gray were behind Appel in readiness, if at all.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the cubs drafted appel, signed him early for a bit under slot so we could pay a little more later in the draft with the caveat in that contract that if appel is healthy he's a september call up. Or at least that's a theory being kicked around by some draft guys who know way more than i could hope to about these kinds of things.

yea but like last year that could be gone come july. And I'd rather go with someone like appel who could fill in than brooks raley like we did last year.

while I agree that relying on bleacher report isn't the best method, that message is echoed (or more likely lifted from) baseball scouts.

Yeah, I really don't...I checked their draft writeup on the Cubs and figured they couldn't frick it up with the Cubs having the #2 pick and everyone and their mom knowing who the first three picks could be.

I also read Baseball Prospectus, but if anyone has any other sites please list 'em.
