Yes, there's a lot less power in the bats now, but at least we're not...

Full blown west coast small ball.

I watched the Cal State-Fullerton/ASU game last night on ESPNU and CSF has to be the most boring team on earth to watch. I forgot how painful it is to watch west coast small ball that when a leadoff guy gets on CSF almost ALWAYS bunted them over regardless if the guy at the plate was a great hitter or not. I watched a leadoff guy get on once and a .330 hitter come up to plate to bunt over the guy from 1st and he was followed up by a guy hitting in the mid .200s. Seriously? SERIOUSLY?

I think we can all agree we dont like how much less power is in the college game now. How we have had to adjust and cant even average a home run a game anymore...but just keep in mind at least we still have a WATCHABLE brand of baseball still that trusts the better hitters and help create rallys. I was nearly gouging my eyes out at the bunting decisions I saw last night, it was painful baseball to watch.

It wins ballgames though, and to the coaches that's all that matters.

Yes, that type of baseball blows, but with CSF's pitching, I can't blame them.

Not saying it isnt successful, different philosophy that does work if you have the pitching to shut down the other team. It's all about constantly pressuring with a guy in scoring position...but you tend to trade a lot of quick outs which leaves the other pitcher in longer as well (hence why you need good pitching yourself).

But my main point was it's just awful, terrible baseball to watch. I know CSF has great pedigree and they always get some big time players through their program, but if I'm a hitter I'm going nowhere near a small ball program, especially if I hit for plus power.

Could you imagine Mainieri asking Katz, Ibarra or Bregman to constantly bunt if the guy in front of them got on 1st and there were no outs?

CSF will likely win a CWS or 2 in the next 3 years playing that way with the pitchers they have.

And I'll be sure to not watch any of their games, unless of course it's against us

They very well might, but it doesn't make it any less boring. That's the OP's point.

I do wish that we would try to manufacture some runs through steals. We haven't attempted stealing at times that seem to be wide open for them. SS and 2nd baseman will be way off the bag and we won't even attempt.

I don't agree with anything you said. I love watching small ball. There's so much more strategy involved in small ball. If a team can win playing small ball you know they're good. You have to be really good in the fundamentals. Base running, defense, and pitching.

I think it's a better brand of baseball.

Ya..I know it's boring..but the OP was acting stunned with how often they bunt the leadoff guy. I'm just saying that with the pitchers they have..that style of play will prob still be good enough to win 1 or 2 CWS in the near future. Btw..I don't agree with their offensive philosophy

Hey by all means if you'd enjoy watching our .330, .335, .380 hitters bunt whenever a guy is on 1st with less than 2 outs, you enjoy the hell out of it...but you'd probably be alone in it

My dad actually spoke to the umpires who called the games this weekend friday night and in their opinion lsu, vandy, unc and csf are the best teams in callege baseball this year.

Serious question: why not move the fences in a bit for a few more home runs?

I just don't watch much college baseball outside of LSU period.

But I gotta say if I did, I'd prefer the small-ball to the old 5-hour 21-14 games of the 90's with juiced up kids hitting homers off bat handles.

There's talk of changing the ball. We'll see if that happens. I hope it's a main talking point in the CWS. We'll tire of hearing it, but I think it will be best for the game.

On topic: I think there is a time and place for small ball. But I have no taste for that brand of baseball.

Eh, I'm not completely opposed to moving in the LF foul pole area maybe 10 feet...afterall there are some dinky LF and RF foul poles even in the SEC (see UGA, AU, UK as some examples)...but at the same time it seems really silly to move in fences that arent far away in the first place. 330 is fairly standard, looks a little "it's too big for us" to move it in.

I don't like baseball but I'll watch if LSU is playing an important game... like last night. I have to say that the sport has improved for me, too, over the ridiculousness that was gorilla ball.

BS

If we won that way, only an idiot would care.

Would you care?
