Maybe you do. In my experience with lines going under a moving boat, arrows sticking in the mud, you just yank the line in as quick as you can. Sometimes the arrows go deep in the mud and you have to wrap the line around your hand to pull it free.

Obviously you yank it out of the mud, you can reel faster than you can wrap and you can hold more line with a reel.
