“I basically think the owners got together and decided not to spend the cash on free agents,” Freeney said. “I definitely think that’s part of it. I think the owners made a pact. There’s only 32 of them and none of them broke ranks. I think they all decided not to spend money.”

Freeney expressed confusion at how the free agent process played out. He wasn’t the only one. Freeman also quoted an anonymous agent stating how unusual the process was this year.

“I’ve been in this business for several decades and there was never an offseason like this. Never,” the agent said.

1.

But

2. The NFL has been proven to engage in owner collusion. Coughs capped year cough. The two teams who didn't collide were punished

A 33 year old who had 12 tackles in 14 games trying to find a reason nobody wanted to give him any money.

They probably just don't think he is as good as he thinks he is. He needs to just take less money

It isn't like anyone got a big contract other than Flacco.... Avril and Drunmerville signed lower than expected deals

The new CBA wasn't too friendly towards the players, they are just now learning this.

didn't Freeney basically get signed once Melvin Ingram got hurt in OTA's?

but.. at the same time... it didn't sound like he was outraged in his statement. If he went out of his way to bring it up, that is one thing but if he's just answering a question, it really isn't a big deal IMO.

I doubt all the owners got together and all agreed to cheap out on FA this year. You build through the draft, and over paying free agents rarely works. Sorry Dwight. Have a huge year and parlay it into another contract

Yeah, but its been his fault for taking this long to get signed

He came into FA coming off a bad season and old and wanted 9 mill a season. Not surprisingly he ha no suitors. Then about halfway through after seeing what Osi settled for, he cut his price tag in half to 4.5, still pricey as hell for what most teams saw as a situational pass rusher

He just got lucky SD got desperate and needed someone to play a lot and ponied up for him.

Take a look at Victor Cruz's situation and there's no question there's some collusion going on there.

It was cold to every one outside of Kruger and a few others

Look at the Corner market, ton of young and proven talent on the table and they all made half of what they were expected to command

This cant be an every year thing because the salary cap floor keeps esclading and soon penalties will start being handed out but i could see the owners doing this to sort of punish the players for the lockout the previous year

Ill just grab my tinfoil hat and sit hereo

oh, gotcha

I don't really keep up with the business side of these types of things.

the Chargers do run a 3-4 though so I guess it will be more of the same for him this year. He's obviously in the twilight of his career...

Money talks...Freeney didnt want to be anywhere near a 3-4 team

His dad went on the radio saying he wanted Freeney to sign with the Pats but his mother was so against it because of some shite Freeney heard as an opposing player in Boston

That year was definitely fishy. If only NBA owners/gms could be so smart.
