David Lee, the one time All-Star in New York was about as empty a player as there was. He was Sharif Abdul Rahim. The Knicks thought enough of him that they didn't even attempt to bring him back instead worked a sign and trade for Azbuke, Randolph and Ronny Turiaf. How valuable is he really if that's what he brings back? The Knicks preferred Am'are, another defensive liability and a lesser rebounder, with uninsurable knees over David Lee. The only thing they could get for him is two projects and a player with a history of heart problems.

He's making $13M a year. Obviously someone thought he was better than Rahim. The Knicks took the sign and trade rather than match.

Aside from that, David Lee has improved as a defensive player in GS, mostly in thanks to Mark Jackson. He's also become a focal point of the half-court offense, as opposed to with the Knicks where he wasn't getting nearly the amount of play called for him. That is a testament to his talent,

All of this is true and signing him for $13.3 per year indicated they had the intention of him being a focal point.

but he is now showcasing his skillset like never before and that is because he has guards who get him the ball.

Then why are his offensive numbers down across the board with those "guards who get him the ball"? Your argument flies in the face of clear evidence to the contrary.
