I Watched Apocalypse Now Redux last night on AMC

one of my favorite all time movies and I have not watched it probably in 5 years. I camped out from 7-11:30 and watched it all on AMC. What an amazing film. They just don't make movies like this anymore. so many iconic scenes. Martin Sheen's greatest performance by far and what makes it great is his ability to fade into the background and let other actors absolutely own scenes and then come back with a vengence like when he shoots the girl on the rice boat---just reminds you of who his character really is.

That's a candidate for the "movies that don't hold up over time" list IYAM. Loved it the first time I saw it. Now-meh.

i actually preferred the original to the redux version.

I have seen it numerous times, but I always watch it when I see that it is on. I caught the very end last night. I was flipping the channels when the scene of the ox getting hacked to death was playing.

It makes me want to go surfing.

The Redux edition is an abomination. The numerous failed comedy scenes completely destroy the atmosphere of the original.

i agree. the atmosphere was just not nearly as good in the redux version, and it dragged way too long.

I know that you aren't Charlie, because Charlie don't surf.

The only thing really bothersome to me was the extended scene 3/4 through the movie when they are at the french house. that dragged out a long time and really added nothing. The scene with the bunnies in the helicopter was actually entertaining a bit and I enjoyed a bit more of Brando in REdux which wasn't in the original. he is mesmerizing in his brief role.

Me too. I actually agree with Carson...
I'm so mad at myself for not seeing this until I was a senior in high school. Its such a great movie, and it would have made trying to understand The Heart of Darkness for summer reading before my Freshman year so much easier.
Yes, the director of my high school English dept was a cold hearted bitch for making eighth graders read The Heart of Darkness.

that is ridiculous. there is no way thirteen year olds can grasp the themes and greatness of HoD

No shite. And, we had to write essays on them. I was in honors/AP english track, and I'm pretty sure the entire class failed the exam on the novel, which was done by the dept head, not my teacher. My teacher spent the better part of our first nine weeks trying to explain it. She told us that novel was one of the works she had to analyze for her Graduate courses.
My mother got mad at me for making poor grades on this novel. I finally got tired of it, gave the book to her, and told her to read it. She read the first half, walked in my room one night, set the novel on my bed, and apologized.

I watched it last night too.
Great scene is when Sheen finally gets to the camp and has his first encounter with Kurtz.
Kurtz asks him, "are you an assassin?"
"I'm a soldier."
"You're neither. You're an errand boy sent here to collect on the bill."

I mostly disagree with this. Many people do not care for the rest break at the French plantation, but I like the context the dinner table conversation gives to the overall story. Also, I always felt the original version was leaving a lot out. Perhaps the sin of the Redux is it puts too much back in, but as a fan of the film, I enjoy the Redux version better.
