Acting in a Youtube series = career pretty dead or accepting of new media?

Maybe even a little of both?
Orlando Jones wrote and produced a new series that has been airing weekly on Youtube. It is financed by Machinima which is one of the largest networks on Youtube. He never really had a high profile career but he was in some big movies.
The thing is though that Eric Roberts is in it as well. I was a little shocked because he's probably made enough money that he wouldn't have to resort to this. Considering the budget for the first season was only $300K I doubt he made a lot anyway. He could also probably do any theater parts he truly wanted to do if he just wanted to work.
So for Woods is it a dead career and this is the only way to work or he is just adopting new media?
There have also been some big names on Youtube this week for the Comedy Week they have going on. Just curious if you think this will become more accepted and normal.

I think we're heading that way, especially with Netflix and Amazon having their own shows

Youtube is also investing millions to get people to develop shows just for Youtube. Those shows will be subscription based plus have ads. The subscription will be like $1.50 for the whole series or something.
I just wonder if there will be more B,C, and D list celebs who do this.

Isn't that what Julia Stiles is doing? She has been working fairly regularly aand has been in big name films.

Defitely both, but way more this:

why not do it if you're a B, C, or D lister? quick, fairly cheap exposure, most of the time you can showcase other talents, like production/directing, etc, and I'm sure the cost of production is overshadowed by potential profit.

yea, that's what I'm thinking. as more and more people turn to internet streaming of movies and shows, the smart thing to do is have original content available at the same place.

I agree but I guess my thinking is that YouTube would be beneath some of them since anyone can upload to YouTube.
The reverse of that is Youtube has also made some people very famous. Sadly for us one of those is Justin Bieber.
There are also Youtube only people that make high 6 figures to in the low seven figures off of Youtube now so I can see the appeal for an actor that has limited work options.

the change of how youtube is viewed has to start somewhere, it won't just happen. I think this will grow exponentially over the next few years

and for someone who wants to work on personal side projects.

Eh, I mean anybody can start a blog, yet you still have insanely popular blogs that make people lots of money. Just because it's accessible to many doesn't mean it's beneath other venues (or not profitable).

Eric Roberts needs to quit fricking around an repirse his role as Alex in the Best of the Best movies.

Yea probably. It's not like there is a really high bar for production on Youtube so the cost is probably very cheap.
As far as profit, they make about $2 per 1000 views so far someone like Ray William Johnson who gets 30 million views per month it's very lucrative.

also a great "audition" for an actor who hasn't done much lately or is almost forgotten

I don't think Ricky Gervais' career is pretty dead and he's been moving towards more youtube stuff the past few months.

Is he? Doing what exactly?

i just think of it as the actor doing an independent film, big names do them all the time, and the film can be great.

No, he's been doing David Brent stuff. He also had his show Derek up there for a bit. Haven't looked in awhile.
